Create a Buzz with “Honey Bee” Slime

World Honey Bee Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in August each year. It gives us a chance to honor honey bees and the critical role they play in making nutrient-rich honey and in pollinating flowers, plants, and crops.

We’ve designed a simple sensory slime recipe that you can try with your kids to spark a conversation about the amazzzing benefits of honey bees. We suggest giving it a golden, honeycomb-inspired color, but make it your own and let your imagination take flight!

What You’ll Need:

  • Clear Glue
  • Food Coloring
  • Baking Soda
  • Contact Solution
  • Glitter (or other embellishments)
  • Bowl and Spoon (for mixing)
  • Upcycled Container (for slime storage)

Creating just the right texture is all about touch and feel. There are no exact amounts to measure, so just have fun with it and experiment until you get the right consistency.

Instructions:

  1. Pour a good amount of glue into a mixing bowl.
  2. Sprinkle a spoonful of baking soda over the glue.
  3. Add food coloring. Remember, a little goes a long way! Mix it well.
  4. Add some glitter or other embellishments of your choice. Mix it all together.
  5. Now add contact solution a little at a time until the mixture is no longer sticky. It should be easy to bend and pull without creating a mess.
  6. Store your slime in a clean, upcycled, airtight container, such as a salsa jar or spaghetti jar, so it doesn’t dry out. Enjoy!
