It’s 2012: Are Kids Today Learning Differently?

Absolutely! Look around. Children are using computers, tablets, smart phones — all the latest technology. You may think your child is only playing game, but look again: you will be surprised to see how much learning is taking place.

The Learning Process in the Earliest Years

The learning process starts at a young age when your children are engaged and immersed in the world around them. Think about how your little one first learned words -— dadadada, mamama. Did you teach your child to repeat a set of words in sequence, then memorize a bunch of grammar rules? Of course not! Your toddlers learned to speak by being immersed in language around them.

Today, we have the best tool to engage children: Technology! Now kids are immersed in a world that includes technology all around them. Learning is no longer confined to one person knowing all the answers. Whenever your child asks: Why? What? How? All you need to say is, “Let’s go find that out on the Internet.” Rather than pushing it off until later, jump on these teachable moments on the fly. They are the perfect way to foster your child’s curiosity and set the foundation for life-long learning.

The Benefits of Life-Long Learning

Through the years I was a teacher, I saw so many kids become jaded, learning how to get A by giving back exactly what the teacher says, without ever thinking and asking questions. If we want our kids to be able to compete in the global market, they will need to think, problem-solve and of course — understand how to use technology effectively. When you harness technology to help your child learn about the world, you unlock the potential for your child to excel in the future.

It is such an exciting time to be a kid! Learning has never been this fun! Being born in this digital age, they literally have the world at their fingertips.
